Ky. court upends death sentence, orders new trial

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Supreme Court has overturned the conviction and death sentence of a Lexington man charged with killing two people in a dispute over drugs that caused a car crash in 2007.

The high court Thursday found multiple errors in the case of 31-year-old Carlos Lamont Ordway, who claimed self-defense in the deaths of 21-year-old Patrick Lewis and 25-year-old Rodrieques Turner, both of Louisville, after an Aug. 11, 2007, gun fight and car crash in Lexington.

Justice Daniel Venters wrote for the court that a juror was improperly seated in the case and a detective testified about Ordway's behavior and how it didn't appear consistent with a self-defense claim.

Ordway claimed the men threatened to kill him for drugs, causing a shootout in a moving vehicle and subsequent crash.
