HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - A dog that was close to being put down is now famous because of his face, that some say has a human resemblance.
At first glance, this poodle/shih tzu mix named Tonik might just be another dog, but a closer look may reveal something a little more human.
Whether it is his round eyes or human like smirk, Tonik the dog has captured the hearts of people across the nation.
He has become known as the dog with the human face.
He was rescued by the Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group in Indiana in 2011, and owners say they did not see anything unusual at first.
“At the time we were kind of like, oh he looks like one of those little monkeys, but there are certain breeds that they call monkeys I think,” said Jen Schwartz.
Meanwhile, some folks in Eastern Kentucky saw a familiar face.
“I looked at it and was like is that our dog? Was that our dog; does it look familiar? And then the more that we talked about it, and when I realized it was at Homeward Bound I realized there was a large chance it was our dog,” said Tammy Noble with the Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter.
Tonik was originally rescued at the Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter in Perry County as a puppy.
He was taken to Indiana in hopes that he would find a home.
“Good for Tonik, that he will probably get a great home out of this but we have so many more that really need homes,” said Noble.
They hope his familiar face will help other animals get adopted.
“The bigger picture is hopefully 5 more dogs get adopted this weekend because of this,” said Schwartz.
Homeward bound has already received more than 500 applications to adopt Tonik, but they say they will be taking their time finding the right home.
