Ky. man says VA treatment caused frostbitten penis

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - An Army veteran says a Veterans Administration nurse repeatedly put ice packs on his penis after surgery, causing frostbite and gangrene and ultimately led to the organ's amputation.

Michael D. Nash of Louisville sued the federal government in U.S. District Court in Louisville, seeking $10 million in damages for what he calls medical malpractice.

Nash went to the VA hospital in Lexington for a penile implant. After the procedure, Nash's attorneys say, a nurse packed his groin in ice for 19 hours. The attorneys say that treatment caused the injuries, resulting in amputation of a significant part of his penis. Attorney Larry Jones says the 61-year-old Nash will require reconstructive surgery.

A message left for the Veterans Administration was not immediately returned Tuesday.
