FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A well-respected national education magazine has ranked Kentucky 10th in education performance.

Education Week magazine announced the ranking Thursday in releasing its 2013 Quality Counts survey. Gov. Steve Beshear praised the higher ranking in a news release.

Last year, Kentucky was 14th on the list, and the year before, it came in 34th.

The highest-ranking state was Maryland.

Overall, the state received a B-minus grade from the magazine. It received high marks in categories such as assessment and accountability, but lower grades in achievement, school finance and chance for success.
