Land Between the Lakes to see $1M budget cut

GOLDEN POND, Ky. (AP) - Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area will have to cut $1 million from its annual operating budget to comply with the U.S. Forest Service's reduction in budgets for all national parks.

When the Forest Service announced the cuts in February, LBL saw a 37.5 percent cut, amounting to a loss of $800,000 from annual upkeep funding.

LBL spokeswoman Denise Schmittou told The Paducah Sun that some smaller roads along with Jones Creek and Rushing Creek campgrounds will be closed. Maintenance of the campgrounds will cease and they will be allowed to return to their natural state. Camping access will not be allowed, but they will still be accessible by foot for day use.

The park plans to keep lake access open through the Jones Creek boat ramp.
