The fire broke out Tuesday afternoon near the corner of Main Street and Third Street in Richmond.
Firefighters rescued two people from the fire.
WKYT’s Jordan Vilines talked to a man who was working in the restaurant below the apartments where the fire started:
Joseph Espinosa works at MexiHollywood and said around 3:00 Tuesday afternoon; he looked outside of the front window and saw black smoke and heavy flames shooting up from the top of the building.
“I looked over at city hall and the outside is all glass and I saw the reflection of smoke coming off from the top,” Joseph Espinosa told us shortly after the fire broke out Tuesday.
Witnesses said fire and smoke could be seen billowing out of the backside of the apartments that sit above MexiHollywood.
“Just around the corner of that building there, there's a porch upstairs and that's where I saw the flames,” Espinosa explained.
Little did Espinosa know, a man and woman were still inside the burning building.
“We rescued two people from the second story apartment. They were trapped in a bedroom and we had to force entry into the building and they were successfully retrieved,” said Fire Chief Buzzy Campbell with Richmond Fire Department.
“Makes me feel thankful that they're safe. Glad they were rescued,” Joseph Espinosa told us.
Along with the two lives saved, Espinosa also breathes a sigh of relief for something else.
“I started praying as soon as I came out because like I said it was their dream, their hope to have this restaurant and it would’ve been terrible if something happened to it.”
Now, he’s grateful that everyone could walk away and that he'll be able to return to work tomorrow.
At this time, firefighters have not determined what caused the fire but they do not believe it to be suspicious.
The two people who had to be rescued from the building suffered non life-threatening injuries in the fire.
MexiHollywood did not sustain any damage to the structure itself but employees say the storage unit located behind the building may have suffered some damage.
