Laurel fire chief awakes to find intruder in bedroom

LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) - Rodney Gay has the kind of job he never knows what each day will bring.

"One of the funny sayings I have, if you think you've seen it all, wait until tomorrow," says the Laurel County Fire Chief.

Early Tuesday morning, a big surprise literally came walking into his house.

"He began to stutter something and say some names," Gay says of the intruder he found in his bedroom about 4:30 a.m.

Police say clearly the man wasn't where he was supposed to be.

"We tried to interview the guy and he was intoxicated. And he could never give a good story on why he was in the residence," said Gilbert Acciardo with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.

Gay also works at the Laurel County Detention Center and he says they deal with a lot of the same people. He says they've never seen the accused man before.

Mark Hensley, 53, was charged with a bevy of offenses including burglary and trespassing.

"I deal these things for other people all the time. But to deal with it's an eye opener," Gay said.

Gay is still unsure of the man's motive and says he gave him different stories of why he was there.
