Lawmakers return to Frankfort

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Lawmakers have returned to Frankfort to get down to business on several key bills, including one that would provide more oversight of more than 1,200 local taxing districts that have proliferated across Kentucky.

The House convened at noon on Tuesday. The Senate gaveled in at 4 p.m.

House Speaker Greg Stumbo unveiled legislation Tuesday intended to create more accountability for the special taxing districts that spend some $2.7 billion a year to operate everything from rural fire departments to libraries.

The proposal beat out pension reform and tax reform for the designation of House Bill 1, which is reserved for the biggest issue facing the state.

Lawmakers will remain in session through the end of March.
