Lawmakers return to Frankfort, take on big issues

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Lawmakers will be trying to find a way to shore up the financially troubled pension plan for government retirees as they return to Frankfort.

Other big issues also are on the table, including tax reform.

The House is scheduled to convene Tuesday at noon EST and the Senate at 4 p.m. EST.

Lawmakers will remain in session through the end of March in hopes of resolving a $33 billion unfunded liability in the state's pension system. Lawmakers want to put more money into pensions, but haven't yet identified where the cash would come from. Some proponents believe a separate proposal to reform the state's tax code could hold the answer.
