Lawmakers ponder voluntary unification of counties

Lawmakers ponder voluntary unification of counties

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The House Local Government Committee is set to consider legislation that would establish a process for voluntary unification of counties.

Republican state Rep. Adam Koenig of Erlanger is sponsoring the measure that would allow two or more counties to consolidate if approved by voters.

Unification of counties has long been a hot topic in Kentucky, which has 120. But local officials have been resistant to the idea.

Koenig said he believes his proposal, which has been tossed around for a decade, is acceptable because it doesn't force consolidation.

The legislation is House Bill 204.
