GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) - He was a standout on the gym floor for Scott County in high school, but today in the same gym that Tyler Hicks played in for his dad, Billy Hicks, it wasn't about points scored, instead it was about the lives touched.

"For somebody that loves the game of basketball the way the Hicks family does, this is some sort of sanctuary, if you will. It's probably never been used in this way before, but definitely today, it's going to be used as a sanctuary and a time of remembrance," described Tim Glenn, who coached Tyler and is an Assistant Coach for Billy Hicks.

The 27-year-old died after a crash last week, during his time home on leave from the Army. Those that were close to the Hicks know this family and this town are hurting, which was evident by the line of people that snaked it's way through the halls of the high school waiting to get into the gym.

"As you can imagine, the Scott County community have really responded" said Glenn.

"It's kind of surreal, just the fact that he's here one day, and then such a tragic accident and he's no longer with us. It's just hard to handle," added Scott Hundley, a former player under Coach Hicks who earned the honor of being Kentucky's "Mr. Basketball," in 2000.

"This was a big loss for the whole town and for our friendship, too," said Shelby Dixon who went to school with Tyler Hicks.

Whether he was playing on the hardwood for his dad, or serving our country those that knew Tyler say he carried himself with the same passion and drive to be the best.

"That's the way Tyler was, he gave his heart to everything," answered Hundley.

"Which carried over into how he turned out, as far as, he finished in the top 5% of his class at Officer's School," said Glenn.

"He was a great kid and he'll be many," stated Joy Tevis, who came to pay her respect at the visitation.

Still, in his mid-20s it can be said that Tyler Hicks left his mark on Scott County, and that will carry on.

"Tyler is just one of those kids that you couldn't help but like him and when you're a part of the Scott County Family it's something that you're going to be in until the day you die," said Hundley.

Hicks' funeral will be held Monday at 6 p.m. inside the Scott County High School gym.
