LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The Lexington Herald-Leader announced Monday it will soon begin charging for the content on its website, Kentucky.com, and mobile platforms.

The new requirement for a digital subscription for unlimited access will be in effect Dec. 4, according to a note to readers online and in Monday's print edition.

"The changes of the digital age also require a change in our business model. Around the country, more than 300 newspapers already charge for online content, including many newspapers in Kentucky," the note read.

The newspaper's announcement said print subscribers will be able to access unlimited online content for a discounted and added fee to their regular subscription. The newspaper will also offer a digital-only subscription for about $120 per year.

Non-subscribers will be able to view 15 free pages every 30 days, not including the home page and several other sections of Kentucky.com.

Kentucky.com has on average 1.4 million unique visitors each month, the newspaper said in its announcement.
