LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Police are stepping up patrols on U.S. 60 in Fayette and Woodford Counties. The area is the site of an ongoing repaving project.

Police say they are stepping up patrols because drivers have been speeding through the construction zone.

"Since the project began we've gotten several complaints about concern from the workers who said people are speeding through there making it very dangerous for themselves," says Lexington Police Spokesperson Sherelle Roberts.

Construction areas are a double fine zone and police say they'll be strictly enforcing it.

"In an effort to protect the lives and safety of those who are working in the construction zone, you will see Lexington Police officers looking for reckless driving as well as speeding," Roberts says. "We remind people that if you're driving in a way of driving in zone where you can injure someone or kill someone you will be getting a double fine."

The fines vary, based on what the violation is.

"We've seen too many cases in the past, not just in Kentucky but in the country, where people are killed in the construction zone just trying to do their job," Roberts says.

Drivers we talked to say they have noticed drivers not abiding by the rules. "If I'm going 60 mph, other drivers are doing 70 or 80, it's like a race driving down that road and it's not safe for those working. Something needs to be done and I'm glad Lexington Police are addressing this," explains Mehar Tashwana, who lives nearby. "The fines need to be $600, $700, a $1,000 something that will teach drivers not to speed through that area."

Lexington Police say they'll have extra patrols on the road as long as they need it.
