Lexington Police plan to be out in full force for Black Friday

Updated: Wed 1:52 PM, Nov 21, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Less than 48 hours from now, shoppers will be out hoping to cash in on Black Friday deals.

But as you start your holiday shopping, police want you to know they'll be out in full force.

With even earlier start times for shopping this year, you can expect to see more Lexington police officers around the busiest areas, like Hamburg and Fayette Mall.

The city's engineers will be monitoring traffic signals to help with the flow of traffic.

Several illuminated signs are already up to for your safety and convenience.

It's not just traffic that police will be watching out for. They'll also be on the lookout holiday crimes.

As always they want to encourage shoppers to lock their doors and to hide shopping bags.

"People will break in the car for fifty cents," says Bige Towrey with Lexington Police. "So if you leave a GPS device, if you leave sunglasses, change, if you leave any of those items, of course, that's an invitation for criminals."

Lexington police will have additional officers on duty to keep things under control. They'll adjust staffing based on the need.

The sky watch tower will be going up in the Fayette Mall parking lot on Friday. It will give Lexington Police better visibility to monitor the area.
