Lexington church group to help victims of Superstorm Sandy

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Nearly a month after Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast many people are still struggling to recover.

But they'll soon be receiving more help from the Bluegrass State. Nearly two dozen volunteers from Quest Community Church in Lexington are now on their way to New Jersey to help with relief efforts.

"As we sit here in Kentucky on this Thanksgiving weekend giving thanks for what we have. We know there are people that are in need," said Quest's Global Outreach Pastor, Dave Phillips.

Phillips said the idea evolved from a challenge by the church's pastor.

"To not just be in our comfortable seats, but to respond and do something to help these victims of Sandy," he explained.

Twenty-one members took that challenged and will spend five-days on the ground in Egg Harbor, New Jersey. There primary responsibility once on the ground, will be cutting down trees, cleaning up debris and homes damaged or destroyed by flooding.

"Really, just be able to reach out to some people, that are in massive need of help," Phillips said.

While there, the group will be staying at a sister church in the area. They plan to return to Lexington next week.
