Lexington day care leaves child at park

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - An afternoon at the park turned frightening for the family of a four-year-old boy.

Police tell us the four-year-old was with other children from the Playhouse Day Care on North Forbes when he was left behind at Meadowthorpe Park.

“I was hurt, very angry, scared for my grandson, I just couldn’t get to him quick enough,” said Cynthia Lee, the child’s grandmother.

Police tell us a couple at the park found the child crying and realized something was wrong so called police.

The child was not able to give police his name or address. Officers went door-to-door to see if anyone knew the child. Police tell us one of the neighbors told them the child went to Playhouse Day Care. Investigators tell us by that time, a worker with the day care arrived back at the park to look for the child.

The family says if it wasn't for that couple, the end result of today's incident could have been much worse.

A couple living nearby saw the child and watched over him until daycare workers arrived.

“I want to thank the couple who spotted him and called from the bottom of my heart,” Lee said.

“If they didn’t call, he still would’ve been out there because they didn’t even know he was gone that he wasn’t there, you left with 6 kids and came back with 5. I always know how many kids I leave with,” Taylor told us.

We caught up with the daycare's owner who said she apologized to the family several times.

“I wish it didn’t have to happen. I feel awful about it but things happen at daycares and it’s just one of those things that happened and I’m very sorry that this happened,” said Glendola Lewis, the Owner of Playhouse Daycare Center.

So far no charges have been filed against workers at the day care. Police have notified the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family services to initiate a state investigation.
