Lexington developers work around old bur oak tree

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Developers of a housing subdivision are making sure they protect a historic bur oak tree during construction.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports (http://bit.ly/1A3m1PD) that residents tried to block a Ball Homes plan for apartments and single-family homes in Lexington because they feared the tree, believed to be more than 300 years old, would suffer.

Ball Homes said it would make sure the tree was protected, and the Urban County Council ultimately approved its development plan.

Now, the company is getting started on development.

The subdivision plan calls for a new road to go past the bur oak. But Ball Homes officials have said that a minimum 50-foot protection zone will be maintained around the tree.

Weeds, vines, branches and pavement will be removed from the area around the tree.
