Lexington health: Wear teal Jan. 25

Updated: Fri 7:18 AM, Jan 18, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is asking folks to wear teal on Jan. 25 to encourage awareness of cervical cancer.

Jessica Jackson with the department says wearing the color on that day is a jumping off point to get people talking about cervical cancer.

The organization Cervical Cancer-free Kentucky says almost all women who die from cervical cancer did not receive screenings or got them infrequently. Screening is highly effective for reducing cervical cancer deaths.

Jackson says the routine screenings, called Pap tests, are recommended for women from 21 to 65 years old.

The health department is also trying to educate the public about vaccines that have been shown to protect women against most cervical cancers.
