Lexington nurseries prepare for overnight hard freeze

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - With below freezing temperatures expected, people across the Bluegrass spent the day protecting those fragile plants. And for people who make a living from plants and flowers, it's a tough task.

It's mid-April, but in Lexington, it doesn't feel like it or look like it.

"This was pretty sudden," Jacob Venn, an assistant at King's Garden Center. "It caught everybody off guard."

A hard freeze, cold snap, or a backhand from Old Man Winter, whatever you call it, it's here. And it's after many things that just bloomed.

"Better safe than sorry is the best thing to do," said Venn. "If you've got anything that's just got flower buds on it that you want to protect, then definitely get it covered. It's worth it."

Nursery experts say to use materials that are breathable and block out condensation, so use cloths not plastics to protect your plants.

At King's Garden Center fruit plants, Japanese maples, and some trees were already covered for protection Tuesday afternoon. And plants just shipped from Florida have crowded their heated greenhouse.

"We've had to spend a lot of the day covering up our shrub beds, our trees, and everything like that," said Venn. "And that's been most of the work today is precautionary measures."

So although it's springtime and business should be "blooming," it's not.

"Business has been a little bit slower because people don't want to buy anything that they're going to have to cover immediately," said Venn.

Places like King's Garden Center are remembering a familiar phrase: after Derby Day, you should be okay.

"That's a rule of thumb that we go by, but you never know," said Venn.

If you haven't covered your plants yet, you still have a little bit of time before the overnight hard freeze arrives.

Nursery experts at King's Garden Center in Lexington don't expect to lose any plants overnight since they took precautionary measures.
