Lexington officer injured in shoplifting arrest

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A police officer is recovering after being injured while trying to stop a suspected shoplifter.

Lexington police say an off-duty officer chased the suspect from the Walmart on New Circle Road early Thursday morning.

Once outside, police say the suspect jumped into a waiting van.

The driver took off, and ran over the officer's foot. Police say a passenger shut off the van and took off on foot.

The officer was able to use a taser on the shoplifter.

Police arrested Robert Franklin, 46. He's charged with robbery and resisting arrest.

Lexington police say the officer involved was taken to UK Hospital to be checked out for a possible broken foot.
