Lexington police investigating $787,000 jewelry heist

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington police are looking for four men who pulled off a jewelry heist worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It happened Sunday night on Wellington Gardens Drive, between Nicholasville Road and Clays Mill.

A jeweler says a group of masked men pointed a gun in his face, busted out the back window of his van, and took off with jewelry and cash which the victim estimates to total nearly $800,000.

A friend of the victim tells WKYT that the jeweler, Sunit Patel, lives in Georgia, but frequently travels with his family selling Indian jewelry.

The friend says Patel had just finished selling in Ohio, was on his way back to Georgia, and had stopped in Lexington to visit when the theft occurred. He says the victim runs his entire business out of his van and the thieves took everything.

Patel's friend is asking pawn shops and jewelry dealers to be on the lookout for thieves trying to sell or melt down massive amounts of Indian jewelry.
