Lexington road crews working overtime to clear roads

Updated: Fri 6:52 PM, Feb 01, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - For road crews, extreme cold can be just as big a problem as snow.

We're told salt isn't as effective when temperatures reach the single digits.

They're also dealing with black ice, which can happen when the roads refreeze at night.

The water refreezing can create a smooth layer of ice that tires have no traction on. On Friday night, drivers will need to go very slowly and keep an emergency kit in the car, just in case.

For road crews, there is no rest for the weary. They've been working non-stop since Thursday morning and they'll continue to be working with more snow headed our way for Saturday.

"we are going to be on 24 hour operations at least until 8 a.m. Sunday," says Rob Allen with Lexington Streets & Roads.
