Lexington scam suspect apologizes

He admits he scammed shoppers all over Lexington and now he has a message for the people of Lexington.

We first introduced you to Gary Thompson late last month.

He told us he made thousands of dollars by pretending to be mentally challenged and begging for money.

He’s admitted to lying, begging and pan-handling all for a quick buck but, for the first time, Gary Thompson is apologizing for his actions.

Now we're left wondering if Thompson has really had a change of heart or if his apology is just another ploy.

Thompson made a pretty penny this past year by successfully scamming hundreds of Lexington shoppers out of money.

“I lied about making $30,000 to $60,000. I may have made $30,000 dollars a year pan-handling,” Thompson said.

Now, for the first time, he's coming clean by not only admitting to what he did but admitting that his actions were wrong.

“I wanted to apologize to everyone in Lexington for pan-handling like the way I was before.”

Thompson says he received a lot of public scrutiny after his hoax was revealed on television but he's hoping the public will give him a second chance.

“I shouldn't have been so disrespectful like that and I should have never done that in the first place.”

His apology may be a little too late for anyone who fell for his hoax; but Thompson ensures us that his pan-handling days are over.

“I have completely quit pan-handling and I’ve been praying to Jesus and I’ve got a few applications in as we speak and I’m trying to get a job in a few places.”

For now, we'll just have to wait and see if Thompson really sticks to his story and stops swindling people out of money.

Thompson tells us he's currently living at a homeless shelter in Lexington and is actively searching for a job.
