FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Carl West, editor of The State Journal newspaper in Frankfort since 1979, has announced his retirement effective Jan. 31.

West's journalism career spanned nearly half a century and earned him a spot in the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame.

According to The State Journai, Publisher Ann Dix Maenza has named Dan Liebman to become the newspaper's editor, beginning in mid-January. Liebman is former editor of The Blood-Horse magazine in Lexington.

West worked for The Kentucky Post in the 1960s and later covered the Watergate scandal for Scripps Howard News Service in Washington, D.C. He'll keep his office at the Frankfort paper, and he plans to write about topics that interest him.

West says he also plans to remain active with the Kentucky Book Fair, which he founded in 1981.
