CLARK COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A central Kentucky school district has alerted parents to a case of MRSA in a student athlete.
Clark County Schools sent home letters telling parents about the case.
Superintendent Elaine Farris tells WKYT the student attends George Rogers Clark High School, and is now under medical supervision.
She says no other cases of MRSA have been reported in the district.
As a precaution, the school is cleaning and disinfecting any areas the student may have been in, and health leaders say that should calm fears.
"There's no reason really for a high level of concern in that the school system is taking all needed precautions," Scott Lockard, Clark County Public Health Director, said.
To prevent MRSA, doctors say you should wash your hands frequently, avoid sharing towels and other athletic equipment, and treat open wounds, as that's usually how the infection gets into the body.
