Madison County airman surprises brother at school assembly

WACO, Ky. (WKYT)- Fifth grader Hunter Moncrief had to write about a hero for his class at Waco Elementary School in Madison County. He had no problem picking who he'd write about.

"My brother John is six feet fall, six feet five inches tall and has sparkling blue eyes," says Hunter.

Even being several years apart in age, many say the two have always had a special bond.

"He's loving because he does generous things for other people."

The sibling connection has survived even as John Moncrief, 21, spent more than a year overseas in the Air Force.

"I can always count on my brother to protect me from my parents."

On Monday, the distance between these brothers was shortened, from miles to inches, on stage as Hunter read his essay about his brother.

Everyone knew about the homecoming except for Hunter.

"I thought it was a real good surprise," Hunter says.

"I can't really put it into words," says Hunter's brother, John. "It's an amazing feeling to finally get to see him after a year and a half."

Several people have been involved in the surprise homecoming for months, including his teacher.

"I was crying before I walked off the stage, just knowing it was happening and how special of a relationship they had," says teacher Beth Richardson.

Now, these two can get back to where they left off.

"Playing with my little brother, taking him to the park, things like that," says John. "I'm looking forward to it."

"Me and him play video games with each other," Hunter says.

Moncrief is home for 26 days.
