Madison County students call on lawmakers to pass anti-bullying bill

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A group of central Kentucky students are taking their battle against bullying to the state capitol.

Students at Madison Middle School in Madison County are pushing for the passage of House Bill 35. The measure would designate October as anti-bullying month in Kentucky and would make the cause's official colors purple and yellow. Purple represents victims of domestic violence. Yellow represents suicide victims.

The students say bullying isn't a big problem at their school and they don't want to see it affect students at any school.

"To know I made a difference and people know there is someone there for them," says student Jason Hurt.

The bill just made it through the house, but has stalled in the senate. Assistant Principal Scott Anderson is joining the students in their call on lawmakers to act.

"We are hoping if this doesn't pass we can talk and find out why and make the changes and bring it before them again," Anderson says.

"Stopping this worldwide, you can start with just a small community and really make a difference," says student Maggie May.
