Major decisions await Ky. lawmakers in coming weeks

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Lawmakers will face big issues when they convene a legislative session on Tuesday.

They're looking at reforming the state's tax code and shoring up the pension plan for government retirees. And they may even tackle the always divisive issue of legislative redistricting, which they didn't get finished last year.

Republican state Rep. Steven Rudy of Paducah said the workload is large but manageable if lawmakers will work together.

Lawmakers will be looking for a way to deal with a $33 billion unfunded liability in the state pension system. A legislative task force recommended pumping in more money without saying where the cash would come from.

Meanwhile, a group appointed by the governor recommended changes to the tax code that would generate about $690 million a year in additional revenue.
