Man accused in former Evarts mayor's murder speaks from jail

HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A man accused of killing a former southeastern Kentucky mayor says police arrested the wrong person.

Kentucky State Police arrested Shelby Shell, 29, Monday afternoon at a home in Berea.

They say last Monday Shell killed former Evarts mayor, Ronnie King, then set his Harlan County home on fire.

From jail, Shell told us King was a good person, and he's shocked police think he killed him.

"I didn't know what to think, for real. It kind of scared me, flipped me out. You know what I'm saying, for a minute? You know I'll beat it. I will beat it in court because I didn't do it. I got alibis," said Shell.

Police have not said what led them to arrest Shell.

He's charged with murder, robbery, burglary, arson, and evidence tampering.
