Man accused of killing wife appears in Laurel County court

A man accused of murdering his wife in what he calls a mercy killing was in court Tuesday.

Chris Chumbley told WKYT cameras from jail last week his wife, Virginia, was dying of breast cancer, and she asked him to shoot her.

In a preliminary hearing in Laurel County Monday, Chumbley's attorney wanted his murder charge to be changed to a causing or assisting suicide charge, instead. The judge ruled against the request, leaving Chumbley's charge to murder.

The case will now be sent to a grand jury.
