Man answers to charges in shooting of Clay Co. hunters

CLAY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A man accused of shooting and killing a southern Kentucky hunter, and injuring another, headed to court Monday morning.

A grand jury in Clay County indicted Dwight Hughes, 61, on murder, assault, and wanton endangerment charges. Investigators say he shot Brian Griffin and Jason Roberts while they were hunting back in April. Griffin died from his injuries.

Hughes appeared in court in an orange Jackson County Jail jumpsuit. He was flanked by his attorneys, Jim and Jerry Cox. A not guilty plea was entered on Hughes' behalf.

Hughes' attorneys made requests to have his bond lowered, preserve evidence and have his trial out of Clay County once a date is set.

Family and Friends of Brian Griffin filled the courtroom. Many wore Brian Griffin memorial baseball tournament t-shirts. None of them wanted to comment on the hearing.

Hughes' next hearing is December 1.
