Man arrested after taking photos of girls at football game

Updated: Fri 3:22 AM, Sep 28, 2012

Parents told police his behavior scared them. Now a man faces charges after investigators say he took hundreds of inappropriate pictures of girls at a middle school football game. Manchester police say parents at the game saw what was going on, and alerted police.

Police arrested Samuel Mathis for disorderly conduct and harassment after his actions at a Clay County Middle School football game.

"He was targeting young female girls," explained Manchester Police Assistant Chief Patrick Robinson. Many of them, he said, were middle school cheerleaders.

Parents were the first to complain, telling investigators he was taking pictures of young girls. They told police he was following some up the stands. When police asked to see his cell phone, Chief Robinson says they found more than 200 pictures of girls from the waist down.

"Truly shocked. I couldn't believe it. You hear things like that in other communities but as a mom and a social worker I see it first hand as well," said Diane Bishop, a mother of one of the football players.

"We think it's sickening. They ought to be punished," said football mom Crystal Smith, "they need to be punished and they need to be away from the games if they're taking pictures like that."

The superintendent tells WKYT she's banned Mathis from ever being on school property again, and that includes coming to football games.

"If we hadn't arrested him I was afraid that it would have escalated more," said Chief Robinson.

The Clay Co. superintendent says she's given school leaders a photo of Mathis, and asked them to be on the lookout, to make sure he doesn't show up at any more school events.
