GLEN ROSE, Texas (AP) - The man charged with fatally shooting former Navy SEAL and "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle and his friend at a Texas gun range was an Iraq war veteran.

The U.S. military confirms that 25-year-old Eddie Ray Routh was in the Marines from 2006 to 2010. He was deployed to Iraq in 2007. His current duty status is listed as reserve.

Routh is accused of killing 38-year-old Kyle and 35-year-old Chad Littlefield at the Rough Creek Lodge shooting range Saturday evening.

Police say after the shootings, Routh drove to his sister's home in Midlothian and told his sister and brother-in-law what he had done. After he left, his relatives called the police.

The Erath County Sheriff's Office says a semi-automatic handgun thought to have been used in the killings was found at Routh's home.

Authorities say Routh has not made any comments as to what his motive was.

The director of a nonprofit that provides exercise equipment for emotionally and physically wounded veterans says Kyle and Littlefield had been trying to help Routh deal with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Routh is being held on $3 million bond.
