Man admits to helping Buckley flee

Updated: Wed 1:17 PM, Aug 22, 2012

A man charged with helping a convicted rapist leave Kentucky admitted Wednesday to the crime.

Authorities tell WKYT that Williams was a former cell mate of John Buckley. They say on July 12th, Williams helped Buckley flee from the Fayette County courthouse, minutes before a jury returned a guilty verdict against Buckley for rape.

After being arrested, Williams maintained his innocence, but today he took a plea deal. Judge Bruce Bell sentenced Williams to 45 days in jail. He will get credit for the time he has already served. Judge Bell also waived attorney fees and court costs.

WKYT has been tracking the intense search for Buckley for more than a month now. Buckley still hasn't been caught.

The Fayette County Sheriff says Williams was caught on surveillance video from a Walgreen's in Georgetown, where Buckley's getaway car was found seven days after he disappeared.
Deputies say it shows Williams on the phone, talking to Buckley's mother, Sandra Merritt.

A warrant has been issued for Merritt, for falsely reporting an incident. Deputies say that she lied about giving Buckley her rental car. They say she was concerned that Buckley would face additional charges.
