Man charged with menacing near Estill County school

ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Since the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut last December, schools across the nation have increased security, including Estill County schools. But after police say a man chased after a little boy near an elementary school, they have stepped up patrols again.

That man has now been charged with menacing.

Police tell us that the man involved isn't believed to be a danger to anyone, but they'd rather overprotect than underplay the situation.

Both school officials and police tell us that incident involved a man in his late 20s, who is intellectually challenged, approaching an elementary student.

It happened when the young boy was walking just one block to school after missing his bus.

"It just scared the little boy because the man approached him and hollered at me and said, 'Hey son, come here,'" said Resource Officer James Gross, with the Estill County school system.

Police have been patrolling at the beginning and end of each school day since the incident last Thursday. Students at Estill Springs Elementary were sent home with a letter notifying parents of the incident.

"His intentions probably were to try to bum some money or a cigarette or something like that," said Officer Gross.

Police say they caught the man near the school again Thursday morning when school was out for snow. They then questioned him and ended up charging him with menacing Friday afternoon.

"We want the kids and the parents to feel safe that we're out there watching out for this stuff," said Gross.

We are told the man will be either served a summons to court or a warrant for a menacing charge.

Until it is decided whether this man will be served a warrant, his name is not being released.
