A young man, who was let of out jail on probation, is headed back behind bars.

Jamar Mays violated his probation twice since serving two years of a ten-year sentence for the shooting death of his friend, Ali Shalash, at a Lexington home in 2009.

During a hearing Thursday morning, Fayette Circuit Judge Ernesto Scorsone revoked Mays' probation, saying he took a chance on Mays and Mays didn't get the message.

Mays received credit for the time he has already served, which is 781 days.

He'll have to serve the remainder of the ten-year sentence.

"I know that we all hope that we wouldn't be here and that Jamar would be successful while on probation," says Mays attorney, Erica Roland.

"It saddens me to send another young person to the penitentiary. It's not like you haven't had a chance Mr. Mays," says Judge Scorsone.

Roland believes his behavior is part of a community issue with too many people running around with guns in Lexington leading to violence.

"We need to figure out what we can do for these young men and these teenagers. So that we don't have more cases like this. So that we don't have more Jamar's going to prison," adds Roland.
