Man dies, police officer injured in Hardin County standoff

RADCLIFFE, Ky. (WKYT)- A man is dead and a police officer injured after a standoff Wednesday evening.

It happened at the Foxwood Apartments in Radcliff around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say they went to the apartments to question a man about a burglary.

"When officers started talking to him, he told them that he didn't want to talk and didn't want them at his residence," said Bryce Shumate with Radcliffe Police.

Officers thought they had eventually convinced him to go to the police department and make a statement there.

"He said ok. Let me get my shoes on," said Shumate.

That's when things took a dangerous turn. Police say the man got a weapon instead of getting his shoes.

The standoff with police began after that and lasted about 30 minutes. Police evacuated 30 people living nearby.

After about half an hour, the shooting started. Police say the suspect died during the standoff. Police have not revealed if he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if officers shot him. An officer suffered minor injuries.

"A round struck his ankle," Shumate said. "Thank goodness it didn't penetrate the boot."

The manager of the apartment complex says the man killed in the standoff used to serve in the military.

Since the shooting involved a police officer, Kentucky State Police are investigating.
