Man hit and killed by train

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Police are investigating why a man was on a set of railroad tracks early Thursday before he was hit and killed by a train.

The Fayette County Coroner has identified the man as 37-year-old Dannic Sawyer of Lexington.

Sawyer's body was found after a half-hour search near Price Road, not far from downtown Lexington.

Firefighters say the train that struck him was almost a mile long and they had to walk the length of it.

"A lot of people do use the tracks as a thoroughfare. It's just a hazard that's out there," said Major Major Phillip Buettner of the Lexington Fire Department.

Sawyer's brother, Brannon Sawyer, says he last saw his brother two days ago.

"Mind blowing, just took my breath away," Sawyer said.

He says his brother had had problems in the past with addictions and the law, but he was working to put those behind him.

"Looking at my brother's life as being on the positive note, he's had bouts with different things in his life but everything was looking up as far as people on the outside looking in," Sawyer said.

The death is being investigated as an accident.
