GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) - Two trains stopped on the tracks tipped off the neighbors that something wasn't quite right off Hamilton Road, in Georgetown.

"I was on my way home and I saw two trains stopping underneath the bridge, that's never something you see. So we thought something was up," said Jason Sheffield, who lives near the tracks.

Investigators stood in the pouring rain, searching for answers to a train accident that killed a man, just after 5pm.

"All the information we have to this point, is it would appear the male subject was on the tracks," Lt. Phil Halley of the Georgetown Police Department.

The mystery only builds from there. Police say they don't know why the man was walking south on the train tracks, they don't know if he was aware the Norfolk Southern train was coming, and most of all they don't know who the victim is.

"Well obviously, we would like to know who he was," said Lt. Halley.

While police don't know those factors, they do say the train operator told them he tried to alert the man by sounding the whistle.

"The conductor did sound his horn and I believe they even applied emergency braking," answered Lt. Halley.

Still, the sight of the flashing lights had the neighbors in disbelief.

"It's just sad," described Corey Miller, who conceded his first fear was that the victim may have been a child.

"They definitely responded well, by the looks of it. When I got here, it was swamped," added Sheffield.

The investigation continues and the Scott County coroner will conduct an autopsy on Monday, as he and the other investigators hope to bring more answers to this death.

The coroner believes the man was likely a local because the victim was wearing black athletic shorts and no shirt, something he called a very critical detail in the search for the man's identity.
