Man killed in ATV crash at haunted trail ride

Updated: Mon 5:57 PM, Oct 22, 2012

PINEVILLE, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - A man was killed in an ATV crash during the haunted forest ride at the Wilderness Off-Road Park.

This year's haunted forest ride drew in big numbers but ended sadly.

“There was a huge crowd here, so naturally it was crowded you know, but this was just an accident,” said Bell County Judge Executive Albey Brock.

Thirty-six year old John Stephen Payne, known as Steve, died in an ATV crash.

The Bell County Coroner's Office believes Payne was riding his dirt bike when a teenager on an ATV hit him head on.

Both were taken to the Pineville Community Hospital.

Officials said two helicopters, ambulance services and search and rescue crews were already located near the event area just in case.

“We did everything that we could to prevent something like this but this sport that he enjoyed is dangerous,” said Brock.

With the weekend behind them, officials focused on the family.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with their family. We've had a tragic accident,” said Brock.

A sad end to what was meant to be a fun weekend.
