NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) - The superintendent of schools in New Fairfield, Conn., says the man who shot a masked intruder to death before realizing it was his son was a well-liked fifth grade teacher who connected with his students.

Police say Jeffrey Giuliano got a call from his sister, who lives next door, that someone was breaking in.

He went there with a gun and found an intruder dressed all in black, wearing a ski mask. Police say Giuliano fired when the intruder came at him with a weapon.

State troopers arrived almost immediately and pulled back the mask to reveal that the intruder was Giuliano's 15-year-old son, Tyler.

New Fairfield Superintendent Alicia Roy says Tyler was described as an easy-going young man who enjoyed being with his family and loved flying planes with the civil air patrol.

Police aren't sure if the teen was trying to break into his aunt's house next door -- or if it was some type of prank gone wrong. No charges have been filed.
