MARION COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A man accused of shooting a sheriff's deputy to death entered a not guilty plea in court on Thursday.
Dewayne Shipp went before a judge to answer to charges of murder of a police officer and for being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.
Investigators say Shipp shot Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Anthony Rakes in November during a traffic stop. Rakes later died in surgery.
Shipp was in a wheelchair as he was brought into the courtroom. He was injured after the shooting, and is currently being held at the state reformatory in La Grange. He said very little as his attorney entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.
A trial date was set for September 23rd and the prosecutor says this could be a death penalty case.
In a unique move, Judge Dan Kelly and attorneys actually set the trial date behind closed doors.
Shipp did not reappear when the date was announced in the open courtroom.
Rakes' family says they wish the trial would happen sooner.
