LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It was a frightening morning for a Lexington girl walking to school. She says a man tried to lure her into his SUV. The girl is a student at Edythe J. Hayes Middle School. And now everyone in the Stuart Hall neighborhood has been put on alert.
She was just walking on the sidewalk to Edythe J. Hayes Middle School on Wednesday morning when she says a driver alarmed her, causing her to run the rest of the way to school.
An email was sent out to homeowners in the Stuart Hall neighborhood, alerting them of an incident involving a middle school student living in the area. The email reads that a 13-year-old girl reported to school officials and her mother that a black SUV pulled up alongside her, asking her three times if she needed a ride to the nearby middle school. The student reportedly ignored him and then the man driving the SUV opened his vehicle door, calling for her to get in. That's when she ran away and the man drove off.
Parents living in the neighborhood say they're concerned and surprised by what happened. They tell us the school district also sent out an email to parents.
"Whenever we get home I plan to talk to her [daughter], but I don't really know how to talk to her about the situation, but I am going to try to find out as much information as I can," said Angela Denson, a concerned parent with a daughter at the middle school.
The incident has been reported to Lexington Police, and they say they are investigating while stepping up patrols in the area.
