MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A central Kentucky man found out Wednesday how long he will spend in prison for killing his mother and girlfriend.
John Payne, 39, of Richmond, made a surprise guilty plea in February to gunning down his mother, Gayle Mullins, and his 32-year-old girlfriend, Meredith King. They were found dead inside their Madison County home back in 2010.
Payne avoided a possible death sentence when he entered the guilty plea.
"Just because he got the possibility of parole doesn't mean he'll ever walk the street again," said Sharlene Evans, Meredith King's mother.
She spoke after Payne was sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole for 25 years.
King's daughter and sister spoke to the courtroom full of family and friends. Payne also spoke to the family, saying he was sorry.
After the sentencing those friends and family members released balloons with King's and Mullins' names and pictures on them.
