TOMPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A south-central Kentucky man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison in the fatal shooting of a former sheriff.

The Glasgow Daily Times reports a judge handed down the sentence Wednesday after 81-year-old Charles Hammer pleaded guilty to murder and tampering with evidence. He was accused of gunning down 81-year-old Herbert "Sprocket" Proffitt, a former sheriff and Tompkinsville police chief, in August 2012.

After the slaying, police said Proffitt arrested Hammer a decade ago, and they think a desire for revenge prompted the slaying.
