LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It was an emotional sentencing for both the families of Robert Benton, and his victim Brian Carr, this morning in Fayette Circuit Court.
"We would like the court to know there are a number of the family members of the victim here, and that one of them would like to speak to the court if the court so chooses."
First to speak was the shooting victim's older sister.
"I just want everybody to know, this violence is a crime that happened, affected my whole family. We are up at night, not being able to sleep," Carr's sister said to the judge.
And Robert Benton's mother spoke, and offered condolences.
She said, "If there's something I can do for you, please let me know. I'm not a selfish woman, and I didn't raise my son to be, to kill someone."
Then came Robert Louis Benton's sentence.
"Mr. Benton you are sentenced to the 15 years, served 498 days custody credit," the judge read.
Benton's punishment also included time for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, to run concurrently with the 15 year sentence.
Benton admitted to shooting Carr in the back in a Lexington parking garage last May.
He pleaded guilty to the manslaughter charge in court back in August.
