Man killed in crash and another airlifted

Updated: Mon 6:22 PM, Jun 04, 2012

Wet weather made for slippery road conditions for people across the state even causing one deadly accident in Clay County.

It happened on U.S. 421 just before noon when one man was killed and another was airlifted.

Traffic was backed up as friends and family gathered at the scene of an accident involving a truck and a SUV in Clay County.

"I didn't get to see much of it. I was going to go down there and see it, but they told me I shouldn't," said Amber Henson, who is one of the victim's cousins.

Henson says her cousin 44-year-old George Wayne Gibson was killed in the crash which was a shock to many.

"He was a good man. He had three kids," said Henson.

Police say the man driving the other vehicle, 21-year-old Joshua Gray, was flown to UK Hospital with several broken bones including one of his legs.

"It appears one crossed the roadway, and the other one struck that vehicle on the side," said Trooper Michelle Lunsford, with state police in London.

Police believe wet road conditions could have caused one vehicle to veer into the other lane.

Police say both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

"We want to remind everyone to continue to drive safe on highways and slow down when the roads are wet. That's what happened here today. The roadway was wet when the accident occurred," said Trooper Lunsford.

Now Gibson's family members can only say what they would have said if they had a chance to say goodbye.

"I love him, and he's definitely going to be missed. It's going to be hard," said Henson.

State police are continuing to investigate the crash.

Gray is currently in surgery and his condition at UK Hospital is unknown at this time.
