Many take advantage of Target's discount following data breach

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Target has offered a 10% discount to shoppers this weekend, following a massive data breach at their stores nationwide between November 27th and December 15th.

Blake Giles is one of the 40 million people whose credit account information was stolen from Target and he says he likely won’t be shopping at the store for a while, "I probably won't shop at Target for a while. I'm angry."

Giles says he used his card at the Target in the Hamburg Pavilion shopping center the day before Thanksgiving and on Friday his Credit Union cancelled his card. "There's no confirmation that it had been used yet, it had been taken though."

With no credit card five days before Christmas, Giles says it could have been bad, but he says planning a New Year’s trip without a card is hard to do."I was planning last night to reserve a rental car but you can't do that without a credit or debit card."

And while Target is offering a discount to their shoppers as an apology for the hassle this close to Christmas, Giles says he doesn’t think the discount makes up for the trouble the security breach has caused.

We also spoke with dozens of people who did take advantage of Target’s discount on Saturday and although they didn’t want to talk on camera they all said they don’t plan on changing their shopping habits because of this one incident.

Target is also offering free credit monitoring to shoppers but company officials say people should also be checking their own bank accounts.

While Target officials say the problem has been fixed, the company hasn’t said who is responsible for the fraud.
