Marion Co. deputy fatally shot during traffic stop

MARION COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Marion County sheriff's deputy is dead after being shot in the line of duty.

Kentucky State Police say it happened when Marion County Deputy Carl Anthony Rakes pulled over a car about 2 a.m. Wednesday.

"It's just no words to express the loss or the tragedy we feel," said Lebanon Mayor Gary Crenshaw. "And the total hopelessness of why somebody would do this."

Rakes was shot during the traffic stop. He died while undergoing surgery at Springview Hospital.

KSP troopers and Campbellsville Police arrested a suspect later in the morning. He is 49-year-old Dewayne Shipp, of McDaniel.

Shipp has been charged with murder and was taken to University Hospital in Louisville for treatment of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Deputy Rakes, who was 31, had been with the Marion County Sheriff's Office for six years and served on the Lebanon Police Department prior to becoming a deputy.

"He was a fine officer and wanted to make a change into the sheriffs department and we are proud of him for doing that," said Crenshaw.

The medical examiner's office in Louisville will perform an autopsy on Rakes.
