Marker notes Mich. soldiers who fought in Ky.

RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) - A marker has been placed on a Civil War battlefield in central Kentucky to recognize Michigan troops who fought and died there.

Michigan Historical Commission member Kimberly Johnson was among those who attended the weekend ceremony at the Richmond Battlefield. Johnson told The Richmond Register that the group wanted to make sure the soldiers' sacrifice wouldn't be forgotten.

As the group raised money in Michigan for the marker, she said many people were surprised that troops from the state fought a battle in Kentucky.

The conflict happened in August 1862 as more experienced Confederate troops marched toward Union troops who were raw and outnumbered. The Michigan Artillery tried to turn back the Rebel forces, but Union soldiers ended up losing the battle.
